Workshops for Armenian delegation on the use and administration of YASI

Armenia | Armenia Community Action and Linkages for Legal Socialization | 16 Apr 2016

During its 5-day study visit to the U.S. the group of Armenian professionals had three workshops on the use and administration of YASI, led and facilitated by Jonathan Kidde, the Founder and Manager of Green Omega, his company that provides training technical assistance around restorative justice and effective intervention.

During the first workshop Jon presented a brief overview of the research that led to the development of Effective Intervention as well as Risk, Need and Responsivity (RNR) that provide the foundation for risk screening and assessment.

The second interactive session referred to the most common screening and assessment tools used in Youth Justice in Vermont. The session participants have identified the difference between screening and assessment and had time to assess the usefulness of two screening processes for Armenia.

The last session discussed where and when screening and assessment takes place within the restorative process and how critical it is to this process. In the workshop, participants brainstormed and created a flow chart to illustrate how youth move through the system; where, when, and how screening and assessment take place.

By the end of these sessions, the group had: a )learned how the RNR principles can apply in their work, b) differentiated screening from assessment, c)summarized the process of gathering information, d)brainstormed how the screening and the assessment tool can be adapted and where and when it could be applied in Armenia, e) considered ways to address respective challenges.
