Peer Clubs of Legal Education Pilot Year Ended Successfully

Georgia | Georgian Legal Socialization Project | 2 Apr 2012

As a part of School Component, GLSP founded Peer Clubs of Legal Education in March 2012. The project aimed at preventing juvenile crime through raising awareness of juveniles on bulling, domestic violence, bad habits, antisocial behavior and school discipline.

At the initial stage, two Clubs were established in Tbilisi Public School #136 and Rustavi Public School #10. Each of them involved 20 9th and 10th grade students who had previously attended Legal Culture classes and had some knowledge on the related issues.

2 training-courses were delivered to club-members by GLSP experts in March 2012. As a result of the trainings 9 project ideas were developed by the club-members aimed at dissemination of legal culture through peer-to-peer education approach.

The Projects were based on actual problematic issues of the respective school-communities. The methods used by the club-members were attractive and interactive and included discussions, slide-show presentations, active games, competitions, exhibitions, screenings, etc.

One of the successful activities implemented by the club-member in Tbilisi Public School #136 was the project named Violence in Modern Animation. The aim of the activity was to provide space for III and IV grades students to analyze the possible negative influence of modern cartoons on violent behavior of children. For this purpose the project team conducted 4 one-hour-long workshops for 80 students. The program included screenings of violent moments from modern popular cartoons followed by discussions on the possible negative influence and ways of self-protection.

Information on the implemented activities was published on the blogs created by the club-members. It is important to mention that other interested groups, such as school principals, teachers and parents were also involved in the work of the Legal Clubs in both schools. They were invited to attend the final event organized by the club-members at the end of semester on June 1st, 2012. As part of the program, the project teams delivered short reports of their work along with some plans for future.

Next year GLSP intends to increase the number of the Legal Clubs to 8 organizations and involve more public schools not only in Tbilisi and Rustavi, but also in Gori, Marneuli, Akhaltsikhe and Samtredia.

Experience gained during the pilot year will serve as a pre-condition for successful implementation of the activities planned under the given component.
