Earth Day Celebration in Kakheti

Georgia | English Language through Civic Education | 27 Apr 2012

Inspired by the topic of one of the ELCE Program modules, Volunteerism , and having the Earth Day celebration in mind, teachers and students of Kurdghelauri Public School, Kakheti region led by ELCE Program ELTT Judy Elliott decided to put their efforts together and do some landscaping in Kurghelauri Public School yard.

A team of volunteers, which consisted of English language teachers, students, the school principal, the TLG volunteer and the ELTT managed to get the seeds for rosebushes and various flowers with the help of Bidzina Gigitelashvili, Head of Kurdghelauri village administration (“Gamgebeli”). A Peace Corps Volunteer based in Telavi helped with the landscaping design. On April 20, students and teachers worked together to turn the grass and laid out the plantings for approximately 100 plants relating the action to the celebration of the Earth Day.

Students have been inspired and energized by this joint effort and promised to take good care of the garden, watering the plants and trying to find new seedlings to diversify the garden.

“If kids start to learn that they can do things with their own hands and involve the rest of the community, our country will definitely have a brighter future. Programs like ELCE inspire our youth and give them ideas and tools for being more active citizens of their communities. I am sure each and every one of these kids takes pride in having managed this small garden project!”said Bidzina Gigitelashvili, Head of Kurdghelauri Village Administration.
