Competition among school-based civics clubs “Ethnicities and Religions in Georgia”

On June 3, 2013 ten school-based civics clubs from Tbilisi, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Shida Kartli and Kvemo Kartli regions took part in a competition on “Ethnicities and Religions in Georgia” in Tbilisi. Competition was organized by the Tolerance Center of Georgian Public Defender’s Office. Event aimed to increase the knowledge of students about different ethnicities and religions and to promote intercultural tolerance. To prepare for the competition, students have studied the books “Ethnicities in Georgia” and “Religions in Georgia”, which have been issued by the Tolerance Center of the Georgian Public Defender’s Office. At the event, Public Defender of Georgia, Ucha Nanuashvili welcomed students and mentioned that participation in this competition already means success, as the knowledge, which they have gained through their participation is important for the development of democratic society. In the beginning of the competition, ACETT Program Director, Marina Ushveridze told students that even though there will be one winner team identified at the end of the process, while preparing for this competition young people have gained unique knowledge, which will greatly enrich their lives and personalities in the future. After an intense competition between ten teams, civics club of Marneuli public school #5 was identified as the winner. All teams, including the winners and participants went on a tour in Tbilisi to visit Synagogue, Mosque and Gregorian church and had an opportunity to receive first-hand information about different religions. Competition was supported by the Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program (ACETT), which is implemented by PH International in Georgia.
