Open Lesson in Civics

Georgia | Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training (ACETT) program for Georgia | 25 Oct 2012

On October 23rd, Khashuri school #2 hosted an open lesson in civics with 9th grade students and civics teacher Jilda Gelashvili. Students discussed the topic of trafficking and safe migration (movement between countries or locations for employment or other reason). Working in groups, the students identified ways of ensuring safe migration and for early detection of the potential threat of trafficking. They talked about how this learning relates to their personal experiences and the stories, which have occurred in their communities, and discussed the issue of re-integration of the victims of trafficking into the society. The civics teacher helped to stimulate critical thinking among the students, using different teaching methods to help students look at issues from different angles, to consider diverse opinions and ask questions of their peers. It was especially impressive in Khashuri that boys engaged in classroom discussions almost as actively as girls, which is often not the case. The open lesson was attended by 30 colleague (civics teachers from different towns and villages of Shida Kartli region) and provided a great opportunity for professional exchange and discussion. A school psychologist and a lawyer, who also took part in a lesson, answered students’ questions about legal and psychological issues related to trafficking. The open lesson took place in the framework of the Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program, which is implemented by PH International. Civics open lessons will take place in all 11 regions of Georgia.
