Chaisubani Students Mobilize to Support Environmental Stewardship

Georgia | Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training (ACETT) program for Georgia | 20 Apr 2012

Young activists from the Chaisubani Public School in Guria recently came together to address the issue of water pollution in the village. Members of the school’s civics club had long recognized growing concerns about the town’s contaminated water reservoir, which was becoming more and more unsanitary because of garbage deposited in the water. In an effort to clean the water supply, used by the entire municipality of Chokhataury, as well as raise public awareness about pollution and mobilize community support, students decided to act. They wrote a letter to the area’s United Water Company to ask for their support in educating the community and posting flyers encouraging citizens to be more environmentally responsible, with the message “Clean water. Clean environment. Let’s keep it together.” The students’ efforts paid off. Not only were they able to encourage more sanitary practices, but the students finally cleaned up the water reservoir.
