ACETT Civics Students in Georgia Connect with their American Peers

Georgia | Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training (ACETT) program for Georgia | 2 Feb 2012

Students in the Adjara Civics Club recently participated in a video conference with their American peers to exchange ideas and experiences about civic education. The event was hosted at the Batumi City Council on January 17, 2011, and included students in the ACETT program and students from Pennsylvania State College Area High School. Georgian and American youth spoke about their involvement in community projects, as well as the similarities and differences in culture, family life, and education in each country. Students were eager to learn from each other about the kinds of civic initiatives that youth are involved in, advocacy and outreach available to teens, and aspirations for future citizen engagement. All students also expressed a desire to remain in contact and hope to create an online portal where American and Georgian students can share information and ideas about civics and other topics of mutual interest. The conference was facilitated by Kate Hoffman, a civics teacher from Pennsylvania, and Emi Haris, a Peace Corps volunteer in Adjara. Emi is also involved in ACETT program activities. The Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program in Georgia is implemented by PH International with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development.
