Students’ Initiative in Ureki -“Don’t Cut the Trees”

Georgia | Momavlis Taoba - Civic Education Program | 14 Dec 2015

Students from MT project’s partner school in Ureki organized a meeting about environmental protection and discussed an issue of forest preservation. Students emphasized the negative consequences of the tradition of cutting fir trees during New Year holidays. They prepared the presentations with detailed information about the negative influence of this action on environment.

Local Government and school administration representatives, as well as teachers and community members joined students at the meeting. Village agronomist gave students fir tree seedlings cultivated in pots, in a quantity that was sufficient for each class of the school. After the New Year holidays, students plan to plant the donated trees.

After the meeting students decided to carry out a campaign calling population not to cut fir trees and use artificial trees for New Year celebrations.
