Rustavi School Students Mobilize to Clean Community

Georgia | Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training (ACETT) program for Georgia | 29 May 2012

Civics club students in Aspinza recently cooperated with the local municipality to improve waste removal systems and clean green spaces in the town. The Rustavi Public School students undertook the project through a mini-grant provided by the ACETT program. Under the initiative, students cleaned the school grounds, planted trees and flowers, and placed benches and trash cans throughout the area. Students also discovered that transportation necessary to remove waste from the town was unavailable. By working with the Deputy Head of Aspinza, students successfully lobbied Levan Beridze to develop a new weekly trash disposal service. Municipal officials also provided many of the benches and seedlings for the project, promising to provide ongoing grounds maintenance. A kick-off event was held on May 18th, with students, teachers, parents, school administration and representatives of the local administration all working together to clean the community.
