Georgia | Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training (ACETT) program for Georgia | 9 Mar 2012

On March 9, 2012, USAID Caucasus Mission Director, Stephen Heykin, and Dimitri Shashkin, the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, signed an amendment to a prior Memorandum of Understanding, confirming increased support to the Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program (ACETT), funded by USAID and implemented by PH International. The signing took place at the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. Heykin and Shashkin spoke about ACETT’s goal to improve the quality and scope of school-based civic education and to encourage youth participation in Georgia’s democratic processes. Marina Ushveridze, PH’s Director of ACETT, also shared with the audience a few of the early successes of the program, followed by students from ACETT civics clubs, who presented on a number of projects they are currently spearheading to foster community development. Since 2010, ACETT has worked in 500 Georgian schools. With increased financial support provided from USAID, an additional 260 schools will join the program, solidifying ACETT’s presence in 30% of all schools in the country. The Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program, funded by USAID, is implemented by PH International with support from the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia.
