School Civics Clubs Help Vulnerable Communities in Guria

Georgia | Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training (ACETT) program for Georgia | 30 Mar 2011

On March 25th, in the framework of the Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program (ACETT), 120 students from 20 schools and civics clubs of Guria region participated in “What Can I Do for My Community.” The event raised funds for economically disadvantaged youth through the sale of student-created artwork and crafts at three ACETT partner schools in the region - Chokhatauri, Lanckhuti and Ozurgeti. Guests included local government officials, entrepreneurs, NGO representatives, parents, teachers and local media. Following the event, students in the Chokhatauri Civics Club hosted a discussion on social responsibility, as well as sold homemade goods to support their club. In Lanchkhuti, local municipalities provided food donations to vulnerable families. In Guria, the local government expressed an interest in supporting the work of school civics clubs. All three craft fairs were organized by Guria Youth Resource Center, PH International’s partner NGO in Guria region.
