Online Debates with Police - A New Model of Police-Youth Communication

Georgia | Adjara Community Policing Initiative | 20 May 2020

Online debates with police officers for the 9th and 10th graders of Khulo, Shuakhevi, Khelvachauri, Keda and Kobuleti municipalities have been held. This is a new innovative model of communication between the police and the youth.

Police oficcers, Ineza Mzhavanadze and Nana Ardzenadze, presented two provisions on the topic of "domestic violence", after which the students worked in groups, asked questions to the police officers and evaluated their presented arguments. The online debate was facilitated by Mr. Pavle Tvaliashvili, an expert in non-formal education.

For students, interacting with the police in this way was a novelty that they liked very much. They noted that they had learned a lot about how to debate and speak constructively with logical arguments and how to act in the event of domestic violence.

This format of debate was created recently during the pandemic within the framework of the ACPI program with the involvement of Mr. Pavle Tvaliashvili and it is unique because police officers are debating, they discuss two positive provisions and, in this way, inform students about different legal issues. This is a new form for police to communicate with youth based on the community policing approach.
