Global New Media Lab (GNML), is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and PH International. GNML consists of two program components: GNML Online and theYouth TechCamp.

The purpose of the Global New Media Lab is to provide students participating in three of the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ high school academic exchanges with the skills to actively engage in and teach others about the use of social media and other forms of information technology for greater civic engagement.

GNML Online sessions guide students through the process of creating a social media for social change campaign using the world’s most powerful online platforms.

Students identify a social issue in their home country and learn how to use Blogger, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google Alerts to create a social media for social change campaign.

"I am so impressed with what GNML made me. The most beneficial experience I have had as an exchange student is the GNML online." -YES Student -Liberia

"GNML enhances social media skills and encourages young minds to take steps towards betterment of society. [GNML] enriches personality and skills." -YES Student- Pakistan

26 FLEX, A-SMYLE and YES students who participated in GNML Online were selected each year from 2013-2015 to attend an one-week Youth TechCamp (YTC) in Burlington, Vermont.

Through this interactive and practical workshop, students developed action plans for how to teach others in their home communities to use social media for greater civic engagement.

During YTC students developed valuable leadership, public speaking, and training skills that will help them be leaders of social change in their communities.

"I believe GNML and the Youth TechCamp put me about 3 or 4 steps ahead of my peers in this growing technology world."-YES Student -Liberia
