PH International has held the closing conference of the 5-year program "Adjara Community Policing Initiative“(ACPI). The program was funded by the US Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
The closing conference was opened by Renee Berrian, Head of the Programs at PH International USA headquarters. She has highlighted PH International's experience in implementing community policing programs in various countries and mentioned ACPI as one of the first pilot programs of this kind in Georgia. Program participants were greeted and thanked by Rebeca Huntr - the director of INL Georgia office; Mike Turner - Senior Police Advisor of INL Georgia Office, Ekaterine Machavariani - Director of the International Relations Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia; Konstantine Ananiashvili - Director of the Police Department of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia; Maia Khajishvili - Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.
9th and 10th grade 30 students from Khulo, Shuakhevi, Khelvachauri, Keda and Kobuleti municipalities took part in an online event with ACPI program: Ideathon – Innovative Ideas Competition. Ideathon was all about generating, developing and presenting in a limited time period innovative ideas on new forms of communication between police and youth. Ideathon itself is an innovative model of communication between youth and police, which was developed within ACPI program during pandemic period.
ACPI and SCOPE programs have developed an educational animation on Cybersecurity. Cybercrimes have increased especially during the pandemic period due to everyone going online. The short educational animation explains with a nice visual and simplicity what is the most common threat in internet, how to keep a cyber hygiene and not be become a victim of a cybercrime.
Live webinar „Road Safety begins with us“ was organized for ACPI Program school students within the municipal projects. Road safety was one of the major problems identified by the local police in Adjara and therefore it was decided that raising awareness in youth on this issue was important. There were two speakers, representative from the NGO presenting the road safety rules and the police officer talking about the legal regulations.
What can we do to have a secure internet? What are the legal regulations to protect cyber crime victims? Due to great interest from students on these issues, with the initiative of local police and teachers second live webinar on cyber security this time focusing on legal regulations was organized for 8th, 9th and 10th grade students of ACPI program partner 32 schools in Adjara region.
Within the framework of the municipal projects in ACPI program photo contest on "People and Pandemia" was organized for the 8th, 9th and 10th grade students of 32 schools of Khulo, Shuakhevi, Khelvachauri, Keda and Kobuleti municipalities of Adjara region. Received photos reflect the emotions and adventures of people in a positive and creative way during a pandemic. The jury included our police officers, a teacher, program representatives and an amateur photographer.
Second Part of the new manual on Legal Culture for Students has been developed by ACPI program. The manual gives practical information on legal responsibilities, rights and regulations in a simple language with visual aids and good design. All of these makes the book more attractive for students to read and get familiar with legal issues. Part 2 of the manual consists of 4 topics: Early Marriage, Domestic Violence, Trafficking, Civic Engagement. Online debates with police officers for the 9th and 10th graders of Khulo, Shuakhevi, Khelvachauri, Keda and Kobuleti municipalities have been held. This is a new innovative model of communication between the police and the youth. Police oficcers, Ineza Mzhavanadze and Nana Ardzenadze, presented two provisions on the topic of "domestic violence", after which the students worked in groups, asked questions to the police officers and evaluated their presented arguments.
Today, when everything went online, cyber risks have increased. That is why with the initiative of Adjara local police and teachers ACPI has organized a webinar on cyber security for students. The webinar was live in closed facebook group uniting around 450 students of 8th, 9th and 10th grade from program partner 32 schools in Adjara.
ACPI has started to pilot online lessons on Legal Culture, which are taught by civics teachers and police officers together for 9th and 10th graders. pilot lessons were held on topics, such as children’s rights, tolerance, gambling and internet games. They were conducted with Microsoft Teams and Zoom platforms. The lessons were quite interactive. There were lots of questions to the police officer, group work and online quizzes. Based on the lessons learned from the pilot, Legal Culture Module will be fully transferred to online teaching.
