In response to the initiative of the Iveroni Civics Club, the Social Service of the Mayor’s Office issued free travel cards to the 131 students of the Iveroni School. The letter, which Iveroni Civic Club received from the Mayor’s Office stated that students from other private schools of Tbilisi will also receive free transportation cards.

Overview
131 students attend the Iveroni Private School, which is located in Didi Digomi district of Tbilisi. These students live in different parts of the city and have to use a variety of public transport to get to the school. The students also have to move around the city during the day to attend various educational events. These costs of public transportation cut into the budgets of their families. Up to May 2015, they had to pay to use public transport as they had no free transportation cards.

In November 2014, the Iveroni School joined USAID funded project “Future Generation” implemented by PH International and supported by Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. Within this project the Iveroni Civics Club was founded. Since the day of its founding, Civics Club members have taken upon themselves resolving school-related issues. One of their first initiatives was to provide students with free travel on public transport. The Iveroni Civics Club has also managed to mobilize members of civics clubs from other private schools in Tbilisi.

On 27 April, 2015, the Iveroni Civics Club met with the representatives of the transportation service of the Tbilisi Mayor’s Office to discuss the possibility for private school students to get free transportation cards and travel free of charge on pub-lic transport. Following the meeting, Mr. Koba Chanturidze, Deputy Head of the City Transportation Service, decided to resolve the problem. The Social Service of the Tbilisi Mayor’s Office also got involved in the matter.

“We are proud to announce that, as a result of our initiative, students of other private schools in Tbilisi will soon be able to use the public transport free of charge”-said Barbara Khornauli from the Iveroni civics club.
