Overview
Orphanage #2 in Petrozavodsk urgently needed a qualified IT-specialist. Computers of social workers who worked at the orphanage were not connected to the Internet and five computers didn’t work at all.

Alexey Schelkanov, CNAPS program volunteer of Cisco Networking Academy in Petrozavodsk, took the responsibility to solve these two big problems.

Neither employers nor principle of the orphanage knew about the CNAPS program in their region and Alexey started his IT-project with the CNAPS presentation. In the orphanage he talked about the goals and objectives of the CNAPS program and got the principal’s enthusiasm.

After that, Alexey carefully examined the status of IT and Internet at the orphanage. It required a lot of work on thorough planning and designing. The standardization of local networks, hardware configuration, floor plan, and the influence of external factors on the signal transmission required serious and professional planning.

Alexey worked hard for more than a month! He demonstrated a high level of professionalism. He prepared a design, which described how to connect the office of the social workers to the LAN and the Internet, calculated the length of the cable and figured out the necessary accessories. He also chose the method of laying the network via a twisted pair cable.

When Alexey implemented the project the orphanage social workers were extremely thankful to the CNAPS program and the young volunteer. Alexey not only connected the computers to Internet he also recycled the parts from five non-working computers to build three working ones.

Thanks to the high level of training by Cisco Networking Academy, the CNAPS graduate’s understanding of the importance of volunteer work and sincere will to help the orphanage received the significant and valuable contribution. Now the social workers of orphanage #2 in the city of Petrozavodsk can serve the orphans much better!
