13.01.2010 | ccf | New Camps Allow Youth to Interact with Nature
Galyna Palicheva, Director of the Kherson Regional Ecological Center for Youth and Children, developed two new camp programs based on her experiences in Iowa during the July 2008 Summer Youth Camps CC program. In the past year, several hundred children were the benficiaries of her innovations.

Inspiration for Palicheva’s Ecological Day Camp for youth in Kherson came after observing similar camps for children in the U.S. Her ten-day camp, which is held in the winter during school holidays, includes classes, interactive activities, role-play exercises, visits to local science museums and environmental exhibitions, and discussions about alternative energy, environmental protection, etc. During the first year of the annual camp, 120 children, ages 7-12, attended. Many parents were also actively involved, as well. The camp is funded by generous cash and in-kind donations from government agencies, businesses, transportation companies, museums and cultural centers. Palicheva also organized a Summer Expedition Camp in June 2009, modeled on youth programs at U.S. National Parks that she observed during the CC program. Palicheva made agreements with two Ukrainian National Parks – Askania Nova and Black Sea Biosphere Reserve – to operate youth programs on their property. One of the programs was a four-day outdoor adventure for 15 teenagers, led by teachers from the Kherson Ecological Center and professionals from the National Parks. The group took daily walking tours, observed natural habitats, compiled data and collected material for reseach. Palicheva continues to share information about the camps to the local community and public schools. Educational kits, videos and other instructional material have been distributed to schools, government agencies and NGO’s. Palicheva also speaks regularly about the camps and their impact on youth.
