What Makes for a Successful Hackathon? A seminar for Tvoy Kurs regional coordinators!

Russia | IT for Youth | 26 Nov 2015

Hackathons are increasingly becoming popular events all over the world, bringing with them the opportunity for thousands of students to grow their coding skills and build a community of developers at their universities.

The hackathon movement has been spreading throughout Russia, but there are still many questions about what makes for a successful hackathon.  In response, the Tvoy Kurs staff in partnership with Microsoft Russia conducted a workshop for Tvoy Kurs center coordinators on orchestrating hackathons for school and university students.

Twenty regional coordinators were invited to the master-class to learn the essence of a hackathon, including objectives and strategies, to further promote hackathon implementation in their regions and give youth the impetus to create and innovate.

During the first part of the seminar the participants were familiarized with the youth-focused hackathon curriculum, different types of hackathons, and the essentials every organizer should keep in mind when hosting an event. Afterwards, they were divided into teams and tasked with creating working prototypes ideas for a web or mobile app product.

The training event was a great success! Everyone dived into the challenging work and enjoyed themselves.  All of the participants were very appreciative for the opportunity to take part in the interesting and enriching seminar; they are now ready and equipped to organize hackathons with their students.
