GLSP Opens a New Season

Georgia | Georgian Legal Socialization Project | 5 Nov 2009

GLSP opened a new school year with a two-day training workshop for teachers and law enforcement officers in Tbilisi. The training focused on the new GLSP manual ‘Legal Culture’ to be taught to the ninth graders of 40 secondary schools throughout Georgia this year. This weekend’s training brought together 25 teachers and 24 police officers from Tbilisi and Rustavi, both from participating and newly enrolled schools. Similar workshops are planned for the GLSP partners in Kutaisi and Batumi in the first decade of October. The training for teachers and law enforcement officers was delivered by the GLSP experts from the Ministry of Education and Sciences and Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia: Giorgi Gakheladze, Nino Eremashvili, Maka Peradze and Elguja Makalatia, who are also the authors of the GLSP Manual “Legal Culture”. The training covered the content of the “Legal Culture” and introduced effective teaching methodologies and teamwork tips to ensure maximum effectiveness of the lessons. Under GLSP, the lessons are delivered by a team of Civic Education teacher and a law enforcement officer for the ninth graders from the participating schools. The agenda also included a session on age specific psychosocial development of juveniles delivered by a psychologist from the Georgian Center for Psychosocial and Medical Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture (GCRT). The course of the training was very dynamic and included group discussions, brainstorming, role plays and even an imitated court session. According to participants, the training not only provided them with new knowledge, but also promoted trust and cooperation between schools and police officers, which in the long run will play an important role in juvenile crime prevention activities. « back
