On March 3, U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland joined students, teachers, the Mayor, Governor and City Council Chairperson in Gori to present awards to student winners of Essay Contest “Woman – An Active Citizen”. 
Ambassador Norland highlighted the importance of meaningful civic, economic, and political participation of women and girls for Georgia’s democratic development.
Guest speakers of the event, local successful women, spoke with students about the importance of women’s professional development and answered the questions of students regarding domestic violence and women’s participation in civic life.
Marina Ushveridze, Chief of Party of Momavlis Taoba program, presented short statistics of gender equality situation in Georgia and mentioned that students’ participation in such initiatives is a step towards elimination of discrimination against women.
Students presented the best assay of the contest, also animation and video on gender inequality and domestic violence. Ambassador Norland awarded the winners of the contest with certificates and prizes.
A discussion took place at the end of the event and students suggested concrete steps for collaboration to local Government representatives. Gori Mayor, Zurab Jirkvelishvili, said that local government is open to students’ initiatives that aim to promote gender equality in Georgia.
