Doing homework with Police officers

Georgia | Georgia Community Action and Linkages for Legal Socialization | 27 Mar 2014

Monitoring of GE Calls school component has been finalized. Expert Nino Kvitaisvhvili and Program Coordinator Rusudan Dzigrashvili visited each and every participant school and attended Legal Culture lessons.
The monitoring revealed several tangible results of the program, among which the cooperation of Police officers, school resource officers and teachers is exceptional. They plan lessons together and skilfully combine their experience of pedagogy and knowledge on legal and judicial issues.
During the lessons each student is actively involved including representatives of ethnic minorities and, what is most important, children with special needs.
Police officers regularly provide children with the information about current legislation updates that are not reflected in their text books yet. Also they deliver messages based on real cases from their experience.  Homework usually requires children to visit local police offices and obtain public statistical data from there, police staff happily assists them.
Instead of just fear, students of Legal Culture lessons have developed confidence and respect towards police officers and towards law in general. They realize that it is possible to communicate with police without special critical case happening.
At the end of the monitoring program representatives gave practical recommendations to the participant schools.  Next round of field visits is planned in April. It is envisaged to organize meetings teachers, RSOs and police officers will gather and share their experience.
