The Third National Fair-Conference of Civics Teachers’ Forum

On May 3, 2014 Stephen M. Haykin, USAID Caucasus Mission Director and Lia Gigauri, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia opened the third national fair-conference of civics to welcome 350 civics teachers from all regions of Georgia. The Civics Teachers’ Fair-Conference is a platform for teachers from across Georgia to discuss innovations in the field of civics education, share experiences, and participate in professional development. Marina Ushveridze, Director of Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program (ACETT) spoke about the results of the program and stressed out the importance of civic education for democratic development of Georgia. Participants of the conference and representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia have discussed current problems in school-based civic education and potential ways for solution of these problems. Nini Beselia, Chairperson of the Civics Teachers’ Forum covered activities of the Forum. A draft Strategy Document of Civics Education was presented by Nikoloz Silagadze, History and Civics Expert from the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and renewed scheme of Teachers’ Professional Development was introduced by Manana Ratiani from Teachers’ Professional Development Center. Guests and participants of the forum have also viewed photo exhibition reflecting activities of school-based civics clubs. Sessions for civics teachers on 4 different topics were facilitated by civics experts and trainers in workgroups. At the end of the day, the best civics teachers from all regions of Georgia were awarded. Event was covered by media. The Third National Fair-Conference of the Civics Teachers’ Forum was held in the framework of ACETT program, which is implemented by PH International in partnership with the Center for Training and Consultancy. ACETT is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia.
