Students in Decision Making

Georgia | Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training (ACETT) program for Georgia | 9 Dec 2013

Through November 22-30, 2013 Youth Forums were held in seven regions of Georgia, Adjara - Keda, Imereti - Kutaisi, Guria-Ozurgeti, Kvemo Kartli –Tsalka, Racha –Tsageri, Kakheti-Telavi and Shida Kartli -Khashuri. More than 800 ACETT students took part in youth forums. Youth Forums provided students with a great opportunity to identify the needs, critical for their schools and communities and address local decision-makers with these problems. Participant of each Youth Forum were divided into workgroups, which were facilitated by civics teachers. Students started with identification of the local problems and later on prioritized the topics for discussions, such as infrastructure rehabilitation needs, children’s rights, civic rights and responsibilities, environmental problems, importance of healthy lifestyle, safety, education and entertainment. Project ideas were developed on topics, which received majority of the votes. Later in a day, students presented their project ideas to local decision-makers, including the representatives of local municipalities and city councils, regional educational resource centers, businesses and media. As a result, each presented project was supported by relevant decision – makers and they will continue to work together during the upcoming months. Annual Youth Forums are being held in all 11 regions of Georgia in the framework of USAID funded Applied Civic Education and Teacher Training Program, implemented by PH International in Georgia.
