Informed Media about Civics Education

On July 24, 2013 ACETT program organized roundtable “Informed Media about Civic Education”. The goal of the event was to provide current status of school civic education to media representatives. The roundtable was attended by representatives from TV & Radio companies based in Tbilisi as well as ACETT program staff, ACETT program AOR and Deputy Minister of Education and Science. Roundtable started with the opening remarks from ACETT program, during which brief presentation of the program was made. State strategy in civics education and national standard was briefed by Aluda Goglichidze, the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia. Meeting was interactive and media representatives had an opportunity to interact with presenters. After discussion and questions session, media representatives had an opportunity to listen presentations of civic club students from selected schools of Tbilisi. Students spoke about the school civic education, importance of applied learning component and about the projects in which they have being involved in last couple of years. Media representatives were inspired by the enthusiasm of students and the results that student led projects have being achieving. Meeting was constrictive and increased interest of journalists in civics education. Participants of the event all agreed that active involvement of youth in civics activities is very important in the process of the development of democratic society in Georgia. As a result of the workshop, due to the very high interest of the topic, number of media representatives immediately offered the media space to students. As a result, on July 25, 2013 Georgian Public Broadcaster’s “Radio1” in its program “Open Studio” broadcasted one hour live talk show “Civic Education in Georgia” with participation of ACETT program staff and school students from selected Tbilisi Public Schools #42, 128, 166. During the talk show guest of the program responded to the questions which radio listeners’ had on civics issues. On July 26, ACETT program staff and Tbilisi public school # 42 student were invited to TV Company ‘Ertsulovneba” to take part in mid-day program which was dedicated to school civic education in Georgia and the results of the ACETT program
