On 28 October 2009, the IDEA Center of the Nizhny Novgorod boarding school for the blind and visually impaired held a seminar where Oleg Shevkun from Freedom Scientific, a world leader in manufacturing and marketing technology-based products for the blind and visually impaired, introduced visually impaired users to a number of special access devices and software.

During the seminar the faculty and high school students of the boarding school were introduced to hand-held video magnifiers Opal, Ruby, Onyx and Topaz, which can be used by people with low vision for reading and studying. They also received basic training in using MAGic – screen magnification software that not only increases the size of what you see on a monitor, but also speaks aloud screen contents. During the practical part of the seminar the students learned to use these devices and software, which make school research on the Web less challenging for those with vision loss.

During the second part of the seminar its participants discussed issues of social rehabilitation and integration of visually impaired people into mainstream society. The seminar facilitator used his personal example to convincingly and movingly prove that that any person, despite his or her disabilities, can achieve success if s/he refuses the temptation of victimization and learns to think of him/herself as an able person with great potential.
