Community Connections Program participants spend at least 15 working days in a business internship. Responsibilities of a Host Business include:
- Completing a Host Business Application form
- Completing a post-program evaluation
- Preparing work space and materials as appropriate
- Evaluating a participant's professional skills
- Assigning a person to advise the participant during her/his time with the company
- Assisting Host Families and program staff arrange transportation to and from work
- Creating a comprehensive schedule of activities and assignments
As Host Businesses prepare their staff to work with the participant, PH staff will provide businesses with a professional profile of the participant, a program calendar and the Host Business Handbook. Host Businesses are expected, in turn, to provide participants with key business information, including a business history, mission statement, organizational chart, annual reports and any other pertinent items.
It is important to note that Host Businesses are not required to provide the participant with a Host Family. Businesses are also not obligated to create any business partnerships with the participant, and long-term employment for the participant is forbidden by the participant's visa status. Host Businesses are strictly volunteers and will not incur any expenses (such as for meals or transportation) on behalf of the participant, nor are businesses liable for accidental illnesses or injuries that might occur. Host Businesses are not permitted to compensate participants during the internship, as all participants are given per diem allowances and medical insurance during their stay in the United States.
