Awareness Raising Event on Trafficking at Khikhadziri School

Georgia | Adjara Community Policing Initiative | 9 Jun 2016

On June 9th, ACPI program visited Khikhadziri Public School in order to attend a community event dedicated to anti-trafficking information sharing among community members. The event was organized by the police officer assigned to the school and students.  It gathered teachers, parents, local youth and students from Khikhadziri.

Police officer opened the event and spoke about anti-trafficking measures and introduced national legislative mechanisms of how government fights and prevents trafficking. Georgia is considered as transit country in terms of trafficking trends, a remote village of Khikhadziri in Khulo region is located on the border of Turkey and local villagers often cross the border for “seasonal works” to Turkey.

ACPI program has successfully collaborated with the International Organization for Migration mission to Georgia. IOM has handed informational materials on trafficking and educational toolkit for 9th graders and teachers to the program. The materials were distributed among students and teachers who attended the event respectively. ACPI program also provided information about the national referral mechanism to support the victims of trafficking. Students from the Legal Culture Curriculum class inquired in depth information about the topic, about its legal and social aspects and welcomed the idea of having Trafficking as one of the topics included into the future curriculum. The event was concluded by a concert during which Khikhadziri Public School dancing and singing teams performed.
