Tenth grade students of Surami village public school #2 in Khashuri municipality implemented a class project “Become a Green Citizen”. The project aimed to increase public awareness about protection of the environment. At the presentation of the project students organized a demonstration of the film "Nature is Speaking - Mother Nature", conducted a discussion and distributed information material.

Project – “We Choose a Healthy Future” | 21 Dec 2016


Tenth grade students of the Village of Surami public school #2 in Khashuri municipality initiated a move to promote a healthy lifestyle among their peers. Students invited medical personnel to the school from Khashuri medical center, who spoke about the negative influence on health from smoking, using alcohol or drugs and prevention of HIV/AIDs. After the meeting a thematic film was presented and discussions were held.

International Day of Tolerance in Khtisi | 20 Dec 2016


Tenth grade students of the village Khtisi public school in Khashuri municipality marked the International Day of Tolerance with charity activities. They collected food and other presents and visited vulnerable, lonely, elderly people of the village. During the visit they also conducted various necessary tasks - cutting firewood, carrying water and so on, and then spent the evening with them.

Students Supporting their Peers with Special Needs | 5 Dec 2016


Students of Tbilisi public school #182, sponsored by a mini-grant project, initiated the support of integration of children with special needs of the day center “Mzis Sivtse” (Sun Space) into the society. Various activities were organized to support better integration of students and beneficiaries of the day center. Students arraigned a joint visit to the theater and attended a performance.

New Blog for Civic Activities | 2 Dec 2016


Presentation of the new initiative of  MT students "the library of civics initiatives" was held in Batumi. Civics students will create a blog named "the library of civics initiatives", where successfully implemented and current projects will be shared. The blog will be an online platform for students to share their ides, information and to plan civics activities. An interwoven system will also be activated on the blog and students will have the opportunity to join thematically interesting activities.

Students in Chiatura advocate for resolution of community's problems | 1 Dec 2016


Civics club students of Chiatura's St. Andrew the First-Called Gymnasium conducted an advocacy process for the renovation of the pedestrian bridge leading to the gymnasium and used by community members. The students organized an information campaign and meeting with the governor of the local municipality to solve the problem. Local municipality authorities reacted to the students’ request and re-sent their letter to the Georgian Railway that is responsible of the renovation of such constructions. As a result of the students' initiative and good cooperation with local authorities, one of the important problems of the community has been solved. On October 10, 2016, the renovation works started and according to the renovation implementation plan will last until January 30, 2017.

Citizen participation is still low in the new democracy of post-Soviet Georgia. Through the Momavlis Taoba program, USAID helps Georgian civics teachers and their students to develop a better understanding of how school-based civic education can extend beyond the teaching of basic facts of government structure to become a means of national education raising the next generation of engaged citizens that make democratic structures work. The young people in this photo demonstrate that unified efforts of many individuals are exactly what makes civic engagement very powerful.
