2-Day Seminars for Armenian Legal-Judicial Specialists on U.S. Practices of Alternative Justice for Juveniles
On April 15-16, 2014, within its AM CALLS program the Armenia office of PH International convened a 2-day seminar for a group of 30 Armenian judges, prosecutors and advocates. The seminar was led by a team of 2 U.S. and 3 Armenian legal-judicial specialists, who had in February of 2014 visited the U.S. for a 10-day professional development program to get acquainted with the best practices of administering Restorative Justice for Juveniles in the U.S.A.
The American experts, Judge Martin Maley, Presiding Judge in Vermont’s Superior Court, and Thomas Donovan, Chittenden County State’s Attorney, presented the history and the current framework of alternative justice system in the U.S., after which the Armenian trainers, Rouzanna Barsegyan, Judge in the 1st instance Court of Aragatsotn, Inessa Petrossyan, presented to the audience to the draft law on the establishment of a new Probation Agency in Armenia and those aspects of the National Program of 2012-16 Legal-Judicial Reform Activities which relate to introduction of new alternative measures. The presentations were followed by active question and answer sessions during which the participants voiced their questions, shared concerns, and exchanged experiences.
Since currently the Armenian Criminal Code and the Code of Procedures are under review, and the draft law on Probation has been submitted to the National Parliament’s approval, the seminar effectively informed and proactively prepared the Armenian judges, prosecutors and advocates about the upcoming changes expected to be enforced in their legal-judicial practices.

Success Stories
 Over Twenty Syrian- Armenian women participated in the training organized in Yerevan by the two trainers who had recently completed training in “Non-Violent Parenting and Conflict Resolution” within the AM CALLS project. This initiative was the basis for an effective collaboration between “Save the Children” working with Syrian Armenians and PH International staff. > More On March 9, within the AM CALLS project, the “Offenders' Rehabilitation Center” State Non-Commercial Organization of the RA Ministry of Justice (MoJ) organized an event called “Motherhood and Childhood” at the Abovyan penitentiary where female convicts carry out their sentence.
